Location Lighting Events with Carla MonacoOldway Gardens, Paignton

Saturday 1st June, 2019from just £55 per person

Photographer Chris Conway will be hosting an off-camera flash workshop and portfolio builder event!

This event has now sold out - please subscribe to our mailing list to stay informed about future studio days, portfolio builders and workshops.

On Saturday June 1st, we'll be spending a full day in the diverse and beautiful gardens of Oldway Mansion in Paignton! There will be both a portfolio builder event and a location lighting workshop run on the same day. Both of these will be hosted by our resident educator, Chris Conway, with our model being the beautiful and versatile Carla Monaco. The content for the portfolio builder and workshop will be different, so we're also offering a £10 discount for anyone that would like to join us on both!

All of the styling on the day will be based around 1960s fashion, with Carla working at clothed levels only.

Weather clause: In the days leading up to the event, if the forecast is for rain then the shoots will be postponed. Cloudy is fine, we can create some moody images - but the studio lights don't like water!

Portfolio Builder (10am-1pm - £55)
This is something that we run regularly at the studio with great success, so now we host them elsewhere! We're steadily returning photographer's faith in this type of event by offering plenty of 1 on 1 shooting time. After we've created each lighting set-up, the 6 attending photographers will all have a few minutes to take shots of Carla on each one. Working at a steady pace, you'll comfortably leave with several hundred high quality images.

Lighting Workshop (2pm-6pm - £80)
These workshops work in the same way as the portfolio builder, but with education thrown in to the mix! We'll start with an informal lesson to go through some essential lighting theory and then move on to creating 5 varied lighting set-ups - putting that theory in to practice by combining different techniques in to each one whilst teaching along the way.

We will mostly focus on using studio lighting outside of the studio and how to balance that flash with the available ambient (daylight) in ways that will satisfy both the technical and non-technical photographers out there! Although we will be using the big studio lighting heads for convenience and speed - the techniques apply to all other flash sources such as speedlites as well.

Both Events (10am-6pm £125)
Join us on the portfolio builder and lighting workshop with discount! There will be an hour lunch break between the events for you (and us!) to catch a breather.

FAQ

What is a Portfolio Builder event?

Our aim is to take a lot of the hard work and financial outlay out of adding great images to your portfolio. We arrange a top photographer to host our events along with an experienced, professional model. Together they will create several unique set-ups for you to photograph.
The lighting will be put in place on all of the sets, and our host will pass on the camera settings to our attending photographers on each one. Then, one at a time, you will be able to shoot with our model for a few minutes - that may not sound like long, but once everything is set you really don't need much time!

What do I need to bring with me?

Any camera that can shoot in manual mode and has a hot-shoe will be fine. The lenses you choose to bring is purely personal preference, but the majority of our test shots will be taken on a full frame camera with 50mm lens. If you're unsure if you have the right kit, or would like any advice, please feel free to contact us and we'll do our best to help.

I'm only a beginner, can I still attend?

Absolutely! Our group events always have a great mix of experience and ability levels from those photographing a model for the very first time up to full time professional photographers. Everyone is welcome and it's a great way to familiarise yourself with the studio and lighting. It's beneficial if you're familiar with setting up your camera in manual mode (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance etc), but help will be on hand throughout the event to those that may need it.
